    Missile Defense

Russian military leaders have expressed concern about US plans for a national missile defense system. Will defense technology be limited by possibilities for a strategic imbalance? Is this just SDI all over again?

rshowalter 9/22/01 12:01pm on the six degrees of separation theory - everyone knows everyone - via a link.

There was a 'The News Hour' American politician talking recently. He regarded himself as something other than 'the people' ... thinking 'them' and 'us' (legislature) ... yet the degree of separation between people and State isn't even one. They are the same.

So on the one hand - an individual here or there may be thought to have status or importance - yet the reality is - everyone can be regarded as the same.

Wilkes (Lanchester/Sociologist) talked about the people wrt the 'gut feeling' of the people. That they'd been lied to by government (UK - nuclear & meat scandals) .. and had reached a point where they reached a national consensous - independent of government.

If the people in the US are given access to straight information - then - they will form a 'national gut feeling' about what is right or otherwise.

The problem with the American media is their failure to get down to 'straight talking'.

Perhaps it gets down to people realising the value of the contributions of others. People require a role. http://talk.guardian.co.uk/WebX?14@@.ee7b085/0 Roles may change. Yet roles are necessary for humans to realise potentials, work cooperatively, and shape the world into qualitatively improved place for those who next 'stand on their shoulders'.

'Pope John Paul, the spiritual leader of the world's 1bn Roman Catholics, wants to make an appeal for ethnic and religious tolerance' Thanks - james22h 9/22/01 12:17pm

Showalter remember the Guardan thread - expressed the need for improved mutual understanding between Christians and Moslems. Reading the above - it seems the Greeks see him as 'direct competion' - rather than promoting understanding between denominations and nations.

The worry is. Will he be directly under a bombing route (for this board a nuclear bomb - bombing route) .. and might one such accidently fall from the rusting grip of an overhead plane.

On "straight talking" and the media - - I've been very impressed by NEWS AND THE CULTURE OF LYING: How Journalism Really Works by Paul H. Weaver--- Free Press, 1994. - - - and concerned about the points he makes - - which seem to me to fit patterns of the news media to be seen today. Not all good ones.

Quotes from Weaver's book: MD1294-1295 rshowalter 3/22/01 8:11am

From your ref above Showalter:

"If you can't talk to somebody, then you don't know something."
There are a lot of "somethings" that the Russians don't know about Americans, and vice versa.
Moving away from the SupraNationaEstablishmant, raises the thought:

"What don't SupraNationals know about 'terrorists' (who might use nuclear) that they ought to know?"

Leaving the board here - but - will leave this with you: WRT lunarchick 9/22/01 12:05pm Animal wiring predominated.

Noting that males in nature wear 'red' .. as per feathered chests, red lines on frogs knee to hip etc ...

Then - what exactly (down the time track) might the consequences be of so many patriotic Male Americans sporting 'RED RED RED' as per stars and stripes ... over these past days ... ? Statistically will this be a greater or lesser effect than a power cut. I'll leave it with you.
