Russian military leaders have expressed concern about US plans
for a national missile defense system. Will defense technology be
limited by possibilities for a strategic imbalance? Is this just SDI
all over again?

Americans need to
act so that they can be PROUD of their flag, and keep their country
safe and strong.
We have reason to be careful. The world could end. I made
a proposal that makes sense now, more than ever.

Since the 11th, assurances that "we have it all under
control" ought to be less credible than before. There are
things that should be CHECKED. The world is too crazy for nukes,
and the US is too cocksure, dishonest, and irresponsible. http://talk.guardian.co.uk/WebX?14@@.ee79f4e/1556

Afghanistan
Executive branch: on 27 September 1996, the ruling
members of the Afghan Government were displaced by members of the
Islamic Taliban movement; the Islamic State of Afghanistan has no
functioning government at this time, and the country remains
divided among fighting factions note: the Taliban have declared
themselves the legitimate government of Afghanistan; however, the
UN still recognizes the government of Burhanuddin RABBANI; the
Organization of the Islamic Conference has left the Afghan seat
vacant until the question of legitimacy can be resolved through
negotiations among the warring factions; the country is
essentially divided along ethnic lines; the Taliban controls the
capital of Kabul and approximately two-thirds of the country
including the predominately ethnic Pashtun areas in southern
Afghanistan; opposing factions have their stronghold in the
ethnically diverse north
Legislative branch: non-functioning as of June 1993
Judicial branch: non-functioning as of March 1995

The surgical strike is a myth An American military
operation is not in doubt; it will come sooner or later, and it
will be fairly spectacular. However, President George W Bush is
aware that an ill-conceived, botched military attempt will be
worse than no action at all. He cannot repeat Bill Clinton’s
tactics when, in response to the destruction of two of his
embassies in Africa, he fired off a large quantity of cruise
missiles at Afghanistan, only to discover that these managed to
destroy a mosque and kill a few goats. http://www.janes.com/

Country Hick
ain't non too slick
watchers and diplomats winced when he used the
word "crusade" to describe his anti-terror campaign and sighed
when he recalled the rough justice of the Wild West in saying he
wanted Osama bin Laden "dead or alive".
"He uses a lot of cowboy terminology," said Marwan Bishara,
a lecturer in international relations at the American University
in Paris. "He seems like a guy who makes too many statements
from his ranch.
"He comes up with all kinds of metaphors which are way off
the mark, not just for the Arabs but also for the entire
international community," he said.
