Russian military leaders have expressed concern about US plans
for a national missile defense system. Will defense technology be
limited by possibilities for a strategic imbalance? Is this just SDI
all over again?

... important to remember three things. First is
the extraordinary degree of uncertainty involved in making
economic assessments right now. This makes any attempt at
forecasting even more difficult than normal. Second is the
importance of distinguishing between short-term responses and the
longer-term impact. The immediate fallout seems bound to be
negative: for several days, at least, people have not been able to
fly even if they wanted to; the emotional reaction to the
unfolding tragedy in New York in particular, seems bound to
discourage consumer spending. Many economists think the economy
will contract in the third quarter of the year. Last, but perhaps
most important, as things stand now the economic impact of the
terrorist attacks might be relatively small in the long
term.

Looking at the countries in the world who feel they have been
stopped and weakened by the USA, to ensure USA dominance. A
Seventeenth Century strategy .. that has no place in the
Twenty-First.
The areas of South and Central America .. now under Commander
Fox, and the continent of Africa, haven't figured in recent
discussion.
Tragic Tuesday WTC is incidental to the nuts and bolts of daily
life in Africa:

Silence seems right to me, for me, tonight.
A day with so much mourning, with so many funerals being planned,
with people so shaken, it is hard for me to deal with the questions
raised in Angier's article, and touched on on the board for a long
time. rshowalter

We have to learn to deal with each other as full human beings - -
even when we hate each other - - we need to be able to have
"meetings of the mind" that are really clear, even when we disagree
about basics - - we need to know enough that, if we fight, we don't
do it by mistake, on the basis of misunderstandings . . . and we
need to find, much more often, ways to "win-win" situations.
I think we can learn to do these things, better than today.
We better.
Out for tonight. Want to go back and reread things that have been
said, this last week.
