Russian military leaders have expressed concern about US plans
for a national missile defense system. Will defense technology be
limited by possibilities for a strategic imbalance? Is this just SDI
all over again?

Some great references and comments from Chris Madison,
cmadison@clw.org Council for a Livable World Education Fund:
Bush lost round one. The Senate Armed Services
Committee cut the President's missile defense budget for 2002 by
$1.3 billion and stipulated that any missile defense test or other
action that might violate the ABM Treaty would have to be approved
by Congress. http://www.nytimes.com/2001/09/08/politics/08MILI.html?searchpv=past7days
Sen. Joseph R. Biden, D-Del., chairman of the
Senate Foreign Relations Committee, mounted a two-day assault on
the Bush missile defense policy, first on NBC's Meet the Press on
Sunday and then in a speech at the National Press Club the next
day. http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-091001dems.story
Brush clearing has begun for the construction next
spring of five interceptor missile silos at Fort Greely, Alaska.
Construction of this test range is one of the activities planned
by Bush that would violate the ABM Treaty. http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap/20010909/pl/missile_defense_alaska_3.html
Few Republicans publicly question the wisdom of
missile defense. But Lawrence Korb, a Reagan administration
Pentagon official and veteran defense analyst, said last week that
Bush's plan is "an end in itself" and is divorced from strategic
or fiscal considerations. http://www.clw.org/nmd/korbcomments.html
ANALYSIS: Philip Coyle, former Pentagon director of testing and
evaluation, explains why the administration will have difficulty
keeping to an accelerated testing schedule that would be necessary
for a 2004 deployment in Alaska. http://www.clw.org/nmd/coylecomments.html
COMMENTARY: To many Americans, missile defense is hard to
understand, let alone justify. Humor columnist Dave Barry makes
sense of it all. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/print/sunday/washpostmagazine/A54657-20

Showalter - did you know your country was currently under attack?
Not Missiles.
Small planes.
Two suicide pilots have hit the twin towers of NY's landmark
world trade center - (have you heard of it?) and the PENTAGON is on
fire and has been evacuated!
Palestine has claimed responsibility.
Wonder if the guys flying the planes were over twelve?

Nero fiddles while Rome burns ..
The quote may relate to Bwsh - that's what comes of having a
president who doesn't understand the need to get out into the world
and work at negotiating.
Clinton speaking this week in Australia made the point that he
was in continual negotiation re the ME throughout his presidency and
tried his hardest working for peace.
The current Bwsh admin is falling over for all the reasons,
mentioned over the past weeks .. with an overall general lack of
direction.
Peace is about the small things, from latrines up, and in that
order.

In relation to the pentagon - isn't it supposed to be a fortress
