Russian military leaders have expressed concern about US plans
for a national missile defense system. Will defense technology be
limited by possibilities for a strategic imbalance? Is this just SDI
all over again?

China: Jimmy Carter, in his typically gentle way,
is deploying his clout as an elder statesman to enter places and
talk to people no one else could. Denied a second presidential
term long ago, Carter these days is hammering away at all he holds
dear: writing books, building houses for poor people and - at the
top of his list - the seeding of democracy across the world.

PRAIRIE CHAPEL RANCH, Texas — After hiking through
dusty rockbeds, thorny bramble, poison ivy and wilting heat
Saturday, George W. Bush paused to muse about how President

Don't call us - we'll call you. Thieves Snatch U.S. Attache's
Phone Book
Someone broke into the U.S. Embassy dacha and stole the address
and telephone book of defense attache
Kevin Ryan, Moscow police said Monday.
Ryan told police that the theft took place between 3 p.m. and 4
p.m. Sunday at the embassy residence, which is located on Tamanskaya
Ulitsa in prestigious Serebryanny Bor, a wooded area in northwestern
Moscow, the police said. Ryan reported the crime that evening.
The lock was not broken, so the thief or thieves either picked
the lock or had a duplicate key, police said. No arrests have been
made and no suspects have been identified.
It was unclear Monday whether more items were missing from the
embassy dacha or why the thieves were interested in the military
attache's telephone book. ... http://www.themoscowtimes.com/stories/2001/09/04/015.html

GORBY: Documentary
MOSCOW (Reuters) Ñ Former Soviet President Mikhail
Gorbachev was back in the Kremlin on Monday Ñ but only for the
shooting of a German television documentary.
Gorbachev spent a working day inside the Kremlin
interviewing former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl for the series
"Secrets of Power," Itar-Tass said. The Gorbachev, 70, is the
presenter of the series, in which he interviews prominent
politicians of the late 20th century.
He has already met former U.S. President George
Bush, Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and German ex-Foreign
Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher for the program.
Itar-Tass said Gorbachev and Kohl discussed the
development of relations between their countries while they were
in power and looked back on the steps that led to the
unification of Germany.

Things are getting more OPEN. ( I'm impressed with how open the
Russian press is, these days -- and how open the Russian officials
are in their language.) A good sign.

If this kind of statement can't be checked - - it should
be. Somebody's wrong (maybe both sides are wrong about some parts
involved).
When these things come up, it would help to get them clarified.
Otherwise, conversations stop -- stumped by a disagreement about
fact.
