Russian military leaders have expressed concern about US plans
for a national missile defense system. Will defense technology be
limited by possibilities for a strategic imbalance? Is this just SDI
all over again?

Right answers matter. Liars, defending systems of lies, are at a
disadvantage. Even when they are numerous, merciless, and strong.
The stakes here are high - - and people should remember the power
of free institutions, and the POWER of
one.

Catherine Graham (84) - Washington post 1963- A power of ONE -
The book picks up steam as Graham grows confident as an
independent, accomplished executive. She discusses the Post's role
in the Pentagon Papers trials, the Watergate expose and a strike
by the press-workers' union, which the paper ultimately won. Just
when she seemed to be getting the hang of running the company, she
decided to retire. (... at the age of? ...)

Note for all Katharine Graham's other achievements, the emphasis
above on the journalistic contributions to the culture that
The Washington Post made, in cooperation and competition with
The New York Times .
People remember papers -- and in important if indirect ways,
value them, and advertise in them, for what they do, and what
they stand for on the great issues of the day.
And the repetitive building of cases, moving things previously
not to be believed, into the real of the believable, and then the
proven, is the highest contribution of journalists to society, for
reasons that the founding fathers knew -- reasons that continue to
be important, even as performance is sometimes inhibited by Weaver's
culture of lying. MD6475 rshowalter

Newspaper articles can lead a culture, by identifying ideals
that, at its best, the culture recognizes -- often when these ideals
are sorely needed, and seriously violated by that culture. MD6759 rshowalter
