    Missile Defense

Russian military leaders have expressed concern about US plans for a national missile defense system. Will defense technology be limited by possibilities for a strategic imbalance? Is this just SDI all over again?

US may resume nuclear weapons tests - http://www.guardian.co.uk/bush/story/0,7369,518717,00.html

"Pentagon officials are also examining the potential of a new range of low-yield "bunker-busting" nuclear weapons, which would require testing to develop, they say."

The milestones in race to the "safer" world:

- "Smart" and "stealth" wearpons.

- "Humanitarian" bombing.

- Pinpoint nukes

- Space based wearpons

- Missiles defence

and ... THE "SAFE" WORLD IS BORN.

B Australians Rally Against NATO - http://www.newsday.com/ap/text/international/ap714.htm

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- "Thousands of protesters chanting ''shame'' marched Sunday to demand that NATO forces pull out of Macedonia and allow an unrestrained crackdown on Albanian guerrillas."

Out of Anglo-Saxon "BOX"? I really hope and congratulate if so.

What do you think, Lunarchick?

BEIJING (AP) -- China's military on Sunday accused the United States and Britain of engineering former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic's war crimes trial to clear the way for NATO's eastward expansion. - http://www.newsday.com/ap/text/international/ap512.htm

It surelly seems so to me as well.

Alex: it all goes back to diffustion theory. People came out to Australia because they were: Shipped out or flown out! Historically there were initially free settlers, and convicts. Then in the 1850's there was a gold rush in Victoria and folks from 'everywhere' came to make their fortunes. The Chinese did the cooking. Australian Federation at the turn of the century saw immigrants limited to those who had a good command of the English Language (sometimes known as the 'white' Australian Policy). After the second world war, refugee resettlement needs along with Hydro Construction lead to folks from the Mediterranean pouring in ... and then folks from everywhere including world troublespots.

Sport: The football leagues put a stop to clubs running under 'nation' banners - too much tribal warfare :)
On Yugoslavian breakup Australia has refugees, economic migrants, and war criminals. Folks walking downtown in capital cities are a little taken aback to see their former political jailer walking past them. They all know each other from back home.

Australia represents 'the world'. Some where in the population statistics it will be shown just how internationally representative this country is!
To get back to demonstrations re political rights .. they take place all the time. People are free to express their ideals, their fears, their concerns for their birthplace. Some stay, some travel back to home country. Demonstrations as such are a message to the Government and Foreign Minister to look and have concern regarding the issues that are important to people.

On Marcedonia - it had a population of only 600,000 - perhaps 200,000 have moved to other countries.

On the one hand: The Albanians were asking for 'equal' rights and not to be treated as 'other'. Showalter's 'Golden Rule'.
On the other: There's a feeling that Albanians have been given too long a leash and should be made to disarm.
Looking with two feet on the ground, were the areas economy to be built up, there would be enough work and prosperity for all the people in the area to settle down and be productive.
When there's chaos the 'cultural gap' can be used as a scapegoat for not seeing 'others' as people.

People need the shield of a set of negotiated rules and laws, under which they can grow and prosper.

Australia has a radio and television station that specifically broadcasts in 68 languages every week! It subtitles, for broadcast and to contract, in most languages, just using the local population of Sydney. Diversity of language also enables 'global call centres' to be established for IT. http://www.sbs.com.au/sbs_front/index2.html Diversity leads to a more complex and accepting RICHER CULTURE.
