    Missile Defense

Russian military leaders have expressed concern about US plans for a national missile defense system. Will defense technology be limited by possibilities for a strategic imbalance? Is this just SDI all over again?

What we don't need is to subsitute one distorted an grossly oversimplified expanation, or program, for another.

The BBC program made me concerned about that, and Jimmy does, too.

The Week in Review is beautiful today. I'm taking time, trying to be constructive.

A central issue is that there has to be communication between staffs , and mastery of complicated subject matter that takes staffs.

At some levels, the answers that are right are going to be simple enough - - but at some others, complex enough that they won't fit easily and completely in a single person's head.

Lies get in the way. For any understanding that we can trust.

Had a very helpful conversation with a friend of mine here in Madison - who asked "what would you want to do, if you could, to sort this out, now? "

Good question. One point is pretty simple, I think. No answer that goes "bang" is the right answer, with stakes as they are.

    we won the cold war
We're the only super power left, and we shouldn't be scolded and hassled by third world weenie countries. Since we're number one, why don't we act like it.
that money could have gone for helping our enemies
I didn't know the USA won the cold war, haven't noticed any 'winners' regarding any wars.

Why can't small countries have a 'voice' .. don't all Americans have a 'voice' within their political system, and all people have a 'voice' within each democracy?

Russia and USA were on the same side at the end of WWII, a point to remember here was that the Russians didn't enjoy access to bottled coke in battle - rather a numerical-millions death/casualty list.

Since WWII when have Russia and America been in combat?

a great national imperative, until that policy meant political trouble for a Republican in the White House

a clever lead paragraph about nuclear waste disposal, from the UPI alumni wire:
PEACH BOTTOM, Pa., June 1 - The nuclear plant here split its first atom in December 1973. Both halves are still here.

Watching children grow to maturity, this documentary, and companion series (Russia & USA, etc)show their wanting personal happiness along with career potentials - wanting PEACE in the world is a given.
The hard years are the Teen years .. especially hard for children in poverty .. perhaps this is when the plastic mind is shaped.

This week's postcard is from Stalinworld … a light-hearted look at a bizarre theme park in Russia featuring memories of man generally agreed to be the biggest mass murderer of the twentieth century. And the punters are lapping it up.

Need for CLEAR information from which to make decisions - even in small places :

Fiji's Labour party condemns alleged attempts to gag academics
Fiji's Labour party has condemned alleged attempts by the caretaker government to gag university academics from commenting on issues affecting the nation.

The prime ministers office has reportedly written to the University of the South Pacific strongly attacking two academics for their recent statements in the media about the worsening economic situation in Fiji.

The two academics had said the economy was heading towards doom if the current trend continued.

The labour party economist Doctor Ganesh Chand says this opinion was held by all respected economists including those from the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the Asian Developnment Bank.

Mr Chand said the economic message was being ignored by the Qarase government. http://www.abc.net.au/default.htm 17/06/01 19:06:09 | ABC Radio Australia News
