    Missile Defense

Russian military leaders have expressed concern about US plans for a national missile defense system. Will defense technology be limited by possibilities for a strategic imbalance? Is this just SDI all over again?

Protected on two sides by oceans the US's had enough fear to create a perilous menace in Hanoy. It fought it for 30 years even thought it didn't have to; even when Ho wanted to continue his WWII alliance after the war. Yet the UK proved safe enough with just the English channel. Even after Ike's warning about the military industrial complex the US is again going to waste a fortune on its technological welfare system. You've won US, you're not in danger, try another strategy you paranoid fools. Fix your social infrastructure instead, invest in your people.

Article on China shows that Missiles aside, there a fundamental family-social factors, that have greater significance to the general population than creating war, and these require a lot more work/time/energy/effort/funding to give more happiness to increased numbers of people.

On fixing the social structure and investing in the people: one notes that the moving of 'food stamps' for the poor from central to State Gvt brought with it a decline in stamps offered.

A tv expose on this showed that to apply people needed a grade12 reading age, and forms were up to 40 pages in length.

People who were obviously 'sick' and paying medical bills were being rejected.

Where is the 'saving' in starving these people and their children ... isn't this exactly the situation in North Korea .. were people were 'wasted' and allowed to die -- simply because the intransigent government didn't distribute aid fairly.

On an economic basis were the poor of America FED, the multiplier effects would surely boost agricutlural/horticultural food production --- from an already subsidised sector .... this flow-on leading to improved demands for the means of production .. creating jobs in the US economy.

The children of the poor would have their brains nourished and be able to concentrate and pay attention in class, enabling them to get improved scores leading to improved access for higher eduction and training and ultimately improved job opportunity.

It's surprising that phd hungry America doesn't have people writing effective REPORTS that place the plight of the poor more forcefully in front of the Politicians -- who are not quite sure what to do with those embarassingly large State Coffer surpluses!

Leads into the further point:

"If the poor of America have politicians to represent them, then why don't they, and who or what do the politicians represent?"

President Bush is due to come to Europe next month (does the guy have a passport?)
the announcement will make little attempt to hide the fact that his administration has already decided to commit billions of extra dollars over the coming decades to missile defences.
The plans were "a hairbrained scheme to defend the US against non-existent threats," Stephen Young of the Union of Concerned Scientists, said.
