Science
Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a
nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a
"Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed
considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense
initiatives more successful? Can such an application of
science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable,
necessary or impossible?

Showalter and Johnson have met in the flesh.
Johnson 'posing in character' has spoken to Showalter on
the phone.
Johnson is a writer
Writers develop characters
The Characters exist within defined boundaries with defined
viewpoints
The Characters appear to be real, to have life, to BE
Yet they are fictions
Spotting the fictions is something most readers of the NYT
won't do ---- they'll assume that each moniker is a distinct
'reader/poster' ....
Johnston brought this board's attention here :

"...it's no surprise to hear you mindlessly link AQ and
Iraq..."
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/10/01/attack/main523963.shtml

"...Rice said the U.S. government clearly knows "that
there were in the past and have been contacts between senior
Iraqi officials and members of al Qaeda going back for
actually quite a long time."
"High ranking detainees, have said that Iraq provided
some training to al Qaeda in chemical weapons development,"
Rice said.
"So, yes, there are contacts between Iraq and al Qaeda.
We know that Saddam Hussein has a long history with terrorism
in general. And there are some al Qaeda personnel who found
refuge in Baghdad," she said. "There clearly are contacts
between al Qaeda and Iraq that can be documented."
At the same time, she cautioned that "no one is trying
to make an argument at this point that Saddam Hussein somehow
had operational control of what happened on September 11th, so
we don't want to push this too far."
Rice added: "This is a story that is unfolding, and it
is getting clear, and we're learning more. ... When the
picture is clear, we'll make full disclosure about it."
If I pushed the AQ-Iraq link "too far" for your
sensibilities in the post you referenced, commondata, well
that's just too bad. We'll both survive somehow. I'd bet that
there will be a lot more information about this soon though.
We'll see.
"...Surely it would be more rational to complain about
the billion dollars worth of US arms sales to Saudi Arabia
annually; didn't that perverse and abhorrent system produce 15
of the 19 hijackers?..."
The Madrassa system tolerated (if not supported) by the
secular Saudi Government did produce those fifteen. If
Iraq ceases to be a threat to Saudi Arabia, perhaps the Saudis
won't need to buy so many arms. We can hope.

Here's a GU thread critical of NYT
Guardian Talk / International / Why does The New York Times
suck? (in your opinion)
http://talk.guardian.co.uk/WebX?230@@.3ba7a0a1!skip=47
There're many examples of how "the paper of record"
has skewed the news over the years. This forum is created
for the purpose of detailing the involved deception that's
very much covered up in American mainstream media. Of
related note is the Guardian Forum entitled THE NEW YORK
TIMES FORUMS ARE THE MOST CENSORED, located in the
Politics/Europe & the World section. Spot the
monikers!

"Even those who sit at the right hand, help him govern with
fear, are not safe ....
If i defect he will kill my son ...
Not only i help Saddam Hussain --- Britain helped him ---
America helped him ..... "
Iraqi talking with Alan Little bbc
Seems the mercyless Saddam is a Frankenstein created, given
breath and scope, by the misguided ... who'll and does kill
anyone who even 'thinks' of 'free will'
So on a HUMAN RIGHTS level he's a candidate for removal
.... but .... people don't want civillian casualties.
The USA may be perceived to be a power that hasn't always
followed through on promises --- leaving civillians who change
tack vulnerable to Saddam's sword.
_____
On the home front the USA government isn't proactive ---
rather leaves important matters to be slowly fought through
the courts ... example ... the sniper case --- lawyers are
looking as to why the guns used were stolen and available ....
On the international front ... the USA has failed to show
leadership to improve matters related to international
improvement - Greenhouse Gas is one example.
