Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a
nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a
"Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed
considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense
initiatives more successful? Can such an application of
science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable,
necessary or impossible?

"Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have
you no sense of decency?" - Joseph Welch, special counsel
in the 1954 Army-McCarthy hearings.
When people in 1954 watched television, and asked
themselves Welch's question - politics changed.
It has been almost half a century - and there have been
enormous changes. Including changes in our sense of decency.
The decisions Morgenson describes happened and were
long tolerated.

Ethics in the military-industrial complex, and in the
security agencies, are likely to be at a lower
standard.
There's plenty of evidence that the standards are, at best,
no higher.

administration says "trust us."
