Science
Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a
nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a
"Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed
considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense
initiatives more successful? Can such an application of
science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable,
necessary or impossible?

"" "The Bush family has managed to involve the United
States in two wars; two invasions in Latin America ,
one that resulted in the fiery deaths of thousands of poor
Panamanian barrio residents and another that resulted in the
Bay of Pigs fiasco; aiding and abetting through murky
financial investments America's Teutonic enemy in the last
world war; corrupting the U.S. Presidential election process;
and making the wealthiest Americans and U.S. corporations
richer while at the same time cutting federal health,
education and welfare budgets and offloading those tasks to
the overburdened states." http://www.mindspace.org/print.php?sid=137

Integrity is a huge issue for journalists - and with
some change there, the world could be MUCH better.
Some work on this thread, and some insights that I was
assigned to look for, could be useful. Paradigm

Sometimes barriers are HIGH - I lack status - but Steve
Kline didn't - and he was stonewalled by CIA for six years. http://www.wisc.edu/rshowalt/klinerec
Pity Bill Casey died under such awkward circumstances - so
very few days before he was to testify about
Iran-Contra. Only speculating - but I wonder what a competent
autopsy would show about William J. Casey's hyper-malignant
brain tumor? ( I don't even know if the body still exists. )
Am I being insufficiently trusting? Maybe. But people
sure have been allergic to me, with my involvement with
Casey. When talking should have been easy.
Was Casey murdered?
Just wondering.
Also wondering, if so, who might have authorized it.
Out. Want to think about being mathematical so as to
satisfy Mazza.
Truth matters.

"" One hundred fifty years ago, most newspaper readers
couldn't get to that ship bringing news from overseas, so they
needed journalists to do it for them. Today's news consumer
can go directly to the source behind a news story. But even in
the Internet age, journalists do more than bring information
to the public. We've gone from an age of too little
information to an age of overload. With all of the information
now at the user's fingertips, Web viewers need context,
someone to verify facts and identify sources, to make sure all
sides of the story are told. The newsroom of the future needs
to be better than ever at good old-fashioned journalism.

"" The problem is finding welding cracks in the M-5 motor
casings; such a crack is blamed for a rupture in a 1993
pressure test, and both improved materials and improved
testing methods have been introduced as a result. The loss of
the last M-3S-2 has put ISAS under considerable pressure to
make sure the M-5 works properly. Original date for the first
launch was mid-1995. It's now mid-1996

Editor’s Response: What’s the role of the press? I believe
that
we should be taking a critical look at the institutions
of our society, analyzing them, and reporting on how they
operate, such that an informed citizenry can demand reform, or
if necessary, radical transformation.
The press, and Journalism Schools, can either work to
further these worthwhile social goals, or can operate as
impediments to those goals. And of course, the press itself
should not be above investigation.
