Science
Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a
nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a
"Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed
considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense
initiatives more successful? Can such an application of
science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable,
necessary or impossible?

In many ways, this forum has worked extremely well, in
large part because lchic is so special.
And there has surely been a great deal of discussion about
missile defense - a lot of it summarized in MD84 rshow55

Gisterme , a poster with many resemblances to
Condoleezza Rice has made extensive postings.
And, just thinking of my own private, personal interests -
- which aren't my only interests, but that do matter to me,
this thread has been worth working on.

The deletions by almarst may be particularly
interesting, in terms of the question "does this thread
matter?"
You might even argue (maybe wrongly, but with a reasonable
connection of the dots) that it has been influential.
Priority ordering for me: National interest . . . NYT
interest . . scientific community interest . . . U.W. interest
. . . my own interest. I come last in priority, but I matter,
too.
Priority order for you , George Johnson - Mazza?

8/2/02 7:37am may well be "low status" -- as you
imply. The most common things are low status. But no less
important for that. I don't matter much at all compared to
some of these most basic relations - which matter a great
deal.

"" Senate Easily Passes $355 Billion Bill for Military
Spending / CARL HULSE
WASHINGTON, Aug. 1 — The Senate easily passed a $355.4
billion military spending measure today, showing strong
support for the higher budget that President Bush sought for
his buildup.
With little debate over military priorities, senators
voted, 95 to 3, to adopt the measure that Senator Ted Stevens
of Alaska, senior Republican on the Appropriations Committee,
said "fully meets the needs of our men and women who serve in
the armed forces, today and for the future." Except for a $10
billion wartime contingency fund, also sought by the White
House, that is being negotiated by the White House and members
of Congress from both parties, the record military
appropriations bill is generally consistent with the
administration's request and is $34.4 billion higher than the
level for this year ....

CONFLICT OF INTEREST ""accusations, which are disputed
by Novation, are among the most serious to be leveled at this
private company, which negotiates medical supply contracts
worth $20 billion annually for a third of the nation's
hospitals.
http://www.nytimes.com/2002/08/01/business/01BUYE.html
Note the role of the NYT .... wonder if there's a CONFLICT
OF INTEREST to be found anywhere in the MD industry? If there
is, then what would the NYT do about it - for the National
Interest.
The above is the most 'mailed' article ... shows that the
PUBLIC care about conflict of interest - as it hits their HIP
POCKET MEDI NERVE.

If the question is "who guards the guards?" - - in
interlocking systems, people and groups guard each other. And
if there is a reasonable amount of clear, correct feedback, it
can work well.
