    Missile Defense

Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an application of science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable, necessary or impossible?

Read Debates, a new Web-only feature culled from Readers' Opinions, published every Thursday.

Can we do a better job of finding truth? YES. Click "rshow55" for some things Lchic and I have done and worked for on this thread.

Last Christmas, I posted 7016 http://forums.nytimes.com/webin/WebX?8@13.glPrby0rWmm.1951252@.f28e622/8538 in a less hopeful time (since not so much had been worked out ) that was more hopeful, too ( because fewer mistakes had been made. )

Peace on Earth http://www.nytimes.com/2002/12/25/opinion/25WED1.html - is a masterpiece of humane and religious feeling - entirely respectful of religion, and all open-minded religious traditions.

I'm not feeling a bit optimistic, just now - but I thought I'd leave tonight on an optimistic note.

"Looking back- 2002 was a good year - and I don't think, in terms of what I can know, that we're so very far, logically , from the hopes expressed in Someday At Christmas by Stevie Wonder http://www.webfitz.com/lyrics/Lyrics/xmas/97xmas.html

"Can we sort the remaining logical problems out soon - and communicate them well enough so that people agree in the ways that matter for action?

"It looks possible to me.

We need to sort out emotional problems, too. For instance,

The Urge to Punish Cheats http://www.mrshowalter.net/UrgeToPunishCheatsNotJustHumanButSelfless.htm is badly calibrated - and not enough people know it.

Real progress still looks possible. But not so easy . . . out.

good call showalter. I know what you mean.

Don't forget to bring napkins and plastic utensils. We'll want to just throw everything away afterwards. So there's no trace we had a picnic there.

Bluestar - I'd like to be clear on how you have the competence or right to diagnose mental illness.

Is it crazy to disagree with you - or think you deserve little respect ?

bbuck: "good call Showalter. I know what you mean."

Of course, the goofy Mr. bbuck doesn't have the slightest idea what Showalter means. I don't ...no body could know what Showalter can possibly mean with the above meaningless sentences. As bad, as confusing, as all the rest...

Cantabb , for the record ( repetition often counts ) will you deny that you work for The New York Times - or an organization closely connecte to The New York Times ?

Asked and answered. Back to your poster ID obsession ? Repetition may occupy you, but doesn’t count.

Now answer this, at least once: What’s the affiliation of lchic ? What’s your current affiliation ?

On January 17, 1961, President Dwight D. Eisenhower have his FAREWELL ADRESS ….

More of the same. How many times you want to post this?

rshow55 - 08:28pm Nov 6, 2003 EST (# 16711 of 16718)

I'm very proud of this thread - and think that I've been doing my patriotic duty working on it - that the NYT has been serving the country by hosting it - and the lchic has been a very gracious Aussie for working on it so brilliantly, gracefully, and entertainingly.

Ingratiating yurself again.

I was very proud of the exchanges between almarst , lchic and me on July 4, 2001 - especially the postings keyed to Koko –

More self-referencing links to nothing useful.

Have I been stupid to have been working so hard and risking my neck here? Well maybe. Anyway, I've had enough for one day.

“Working so hard” on what ? Saw nothing specific yet or MD-related.

More of your nostalgia…. And, Why NOT, just re-load and spill here once more time, before Nov 14. If it makes you [rshow"Repetition counts"55] feel better !
