Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a
nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a
"Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed
considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense
initiatives more successful? Can such an application of
science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable,
necessary or impossible?

I often post on Guardian Talk fora . . .
Jorian319 seems to feel that is dishonorable -that I'm
cheating - and by some standards - you can argue that.
It would be good to clarify those standards.
I opened 2003 on this board with 7177 http://forums.nytimes.com/webin/WebX?8@13.AFAgbGhiFsF.8906564@.f28e622/8700
"I think this is a year where some lessons
are going to have to be learned about stability and
function of international systems, in terms of basic
requirements of order , symmetry , and
harmony - at the levels that make sense - and learned
clearly and explicitly enough to produce systems that have
these properties by design, not by chance."
And said that "If people with real influence wanted to
check the claims about facts and relations on this board,
according to procedures set out, for instance, in http://talk.guardian.co.uk/WebX?14@@.ee7a163/296
.
Was that cheating?
Is attribution of insanity cheating - or is it
justified, righteous punishment - that hurts, and is intended
to hurt? You can argue either way - on the basis of different
assumptions and weights on what is important.
Are hostile acts and statements that people "don't intend
to be hostile" mistakes - or repressions for which they
are significantly responsible?
We need to be clear about what people mean and how
people feel about cheating - and people often
need to get clearer themselves. Otherwise - things that
need to be worked out can't be.
People all over the world are angry with the Bush
administration because they are convinced that it lies and
cheats much too much and much too often. Foreign Views of
U.S. Darken Since Sept. 11 By RICHARD BERNSTEIN http://www.nytimes.com/2003/09/11/international/11OPIN.html
shows a survey Unpopular America - that indicates clear
failure of the Bush administration to do jobs that the
reasonable defense of the United States requires.
We have things that need to be fixed. It is
patriotic and loyal for me to say so.
