Science
Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a
nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a
"Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed
considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense
initiatives more successful? Can such an application of
science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable,
necessary or impossible?

As American soldiers die almost daily in Iraq, George W.
Bush's doctrine of preemptive war is coming face to face with
the hard realities of a complex world. But Bush shows little
sign that he is learning lessons from the mounting death toll
as he continues to cast the problem of the Middle East as a
simplistic showdown between good guys vs. bad guys. - http://www.consortiumnews.com/2003/090303a.html

Senator Byrd's arguments are looking very strong in
retrospect.
Congress Must Resist the Rush to War By ROBERT C.

Under the best interpretations possible, "good intentions"
have only been part of the story.
The New Jersey Ethicist By BILL KELLER http://www.nytimes.com/2002/09/21/opinion/21KELL.html
" Allow me to quote my favorite moral
philosopher, Karl Rove. Remember what he told Republican
candidates back in June? "Focus on war." (O.K., he's no
troubadour, but the man gets to the point.) D'you think he
meant, "Let's all focus on the war and have a moment of
silence and feel blue?" Of course not, knucklehead, he
meant, "Take the war, and run the wussy Democrats into the
ground with it."
Another extremely interesting piece on Wolfowitz: The
Sunshine Warrior by BILL KELLER http://www.nytimes.com/2002/09/22/magazine/22WOLFOWITZ.html
For pre-emptive war to be a reasonable option -
as a last resort - negotiation patterns have to be
much better than they are.
