Science
Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a
nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a
"Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed
considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense
initiatives more successful? Can such an application of
science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable,
necessary or impossible?

Rshow,
'One doesn't have to have an especially dirty mind to read
http://www.ababy'sgotmydingo.com/ayresrock/dinnertime.htm
and think of incest and child molestation -'
A dingo is a powerful Australian bush dog, famous for
having eaten a baby at Ayres Rock in central Australia. The
incident spawned a huge and controversial court case.
My epithet relates to your obvious feelings of
powerlessness and impotence ... a mere baby has your power
(dingo). But the issue remains (at least in my mind) whether
or not you would be just an ego-dingo on a dinnertime feeding
if actually given the power you desire. You do have trouble in
garnering people's trust as is evidenced in exchanges with
most posters on this forum for example.
Another facet to this is that I think there is a sense of
powerlessness in all participants (including myself) in the
NYT Science forums not just yourself. This stems from the
frustration of having good and sometimes brilliant ideas but
because progress seems so slow we too feel as though we are
'in jail' ... in a scientific sense. I'm sure Will Cooper
would agree.
In the intervening lulls between scientific breakthroughs,
it is I think useful to play a few pranks, tell a few jokes
and have some fun ... in an entertaining way of course.
Incest ... isn't that what Indians and Hippies burn to make
the air smell nice?

truth? YES. Click "rshow55" for some things Lchic and I have
done and worked for on this thread.
Wonderful pieces in Op Ed today - that help me respond to
Fredmoore's question about power, and its proper
limits.
I liked this piece especially:
Speak, O Muse, of Strategic Synergy By RANDALL
ROTHENBERG http://www.nytimes.com/2003/08/13/opinion/13ROTH.html
The language of modern business is under
attack, but corporate vernacular can be used as a
negotiation tool.
But is it sometimes possible to do better than the
organizational usages Rothenberg describes - differently?
Eisenhower longed to do better - in some basic ways, for basic
reasons that seem just as important today as they did when I
was commondeered by the government, at Eisenhower's request.
I've been working within a framework of agreements for a
long time. Keeping faith pretty well, overall, I think.
