Science
Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a
nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a
"Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed
considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense
initiatives more successful? Can such an application of
science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable,
necessary or impossible?

We have to work to make the basics of our
economies work better. The whole world is under economic
pressure - and it is plain that no nation state now has all
the answers it needs. Bush's essentially religious response
that we should "just trust the market" is too simple.
We have to do better. And that will take work and analysis.
Bush's Record on Jobs: Risking Unhappy Comparisons
By DAVID LEONHARDT http://www.nytimes.com/2003/07/03/business/03JOBS.html
For George W. Bush, the race has begun to
escape comparisons to Herbert Hoover.
With more than two million jobs having
disappeared since Mr. Bush took office in January 2001, he
finds himself in danger of becoming the first president
since Hoover to oversee a decline in the country's
employment. Economists disagree on how much blame, if any,
Mr. Bush deserves for the long slump, but even White House
aides view the economy as one of the only big threats to his
re-election campaign.
Now, a turning point could be approaching.
The Labor Department will release its jobs report for
June this morning, and some forecasters are predicting that
it will mark the beginning of a rebound.
The turning point turned the wrong way.
Jobless Rate Rises to 6.4 Percent; Highest in More Than

Democrats Blaming Poor Economy on Bush By THE
ASSOCIATED PRESS Filed at 4:24 p.m. ET http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/national/AP-Democrats-Unemployment.html
"WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democrats are trying to
place the blame for high unemployment on President Bush, and
they see economic woes as key to turning voters against him
in next year's election.
"Within an hour of the Thursday morning
announcement that July's unemployment numbers had increased
to a nine-year high of 6.4 percent, Democrats began
assailing President Bush's economic policies.
"``It's a shame that so many Americans still
can't find jobs, and it's a shame that President Bush
doesn't have a clue about how to make things better,'' said
North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, a candidate for the White
House. ``It's clear that the president's tax cuts for the
wealthy are failing the rest of the country.''
"Sen. Bob Graham of Florida, another
presidential hopeful, said the jobless rate is ``further
evidence that Bushonomics has failed America.'' One of his
rivals, former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, said the numbers
show ``America's working families are under siege -- by the
Bush administration and by the worsening economy.''
"Although economists disagree whether the
president deserves any blame for the unemployment numbers,
his political rivals see it as the chink in Bush's armor. .

. . . 235,000 U.S. servicemen were exposed to nuclear
weapons testing during military duty. The people who gave
the orders knew there were risks, but wanted numbers.
Now, the danger is that we don't clean up our messes - and
our corruptions.

We can do better than that, and have to.
the Onion often justifies its trademark of

Prosperity is Finally Over
"Mere days from assuming the Presidency and
closing the door on eight years of Bill Clinton,
president-elect George W. Bush assured the nation in a
televised address Tuesday that "our long national nightmare
of peace and prosperity is finally over."
Not such a "funny" prediction.
