Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a
nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a
"Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed
considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense
initiatives more successful? Can such an application of
science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable,
necessary or impossible?

Can we do a better job of finding truth? YES. Click
"rshow55" for some things Lchic and I have done and worked for
on this thread.
Graceful approaches might well be possible - but with some
firmness.

Fractals, which are mathematical objects - from a virtual
world - that can be mapped to things we can see - repeat again
and again, at different levels. If we're to keep our
tempers, and sort things out - it makes sense to think about
them in fairly neutral terms - the same intellectual problems
are harder in the more important cases where our emotions are
involved.
We can't do without our emotions. But if we involve our
emotions - as we must - we should try to involve all the ones
that matter - and in ways that are balanced, and fit together.
How big, and how ugly do we want our fights to be?
I play with mathematics some, and maybe that makes me
cold-hearted and narrow - but it is worth remembering that
there are messes that get sorted out reasonably and
gracefully in the world (in terms of what is possible) when at
least some of the people involved have some authority, some
wisdom, and keep their temper.

If ideas of "equilibrium" and "domination"
are applied to the wrong model , that is much simpler than
the real case, ugly results, far worse than the best
possible, can result. In peacemaking, Mary Poppins, (perhaps
reinforced, from time to time, by Schwartzenegger in his
kindergarten teacher role) makes a more impressive, more
sophisticated example than Kissinger.
She finds graceful solutions well fit to
detailed cases...

we need to move away from Dr. Stragelove
"solutions" -- and toward the kinds of focused, disciplined,
graceful solutions that ordinary people so often craft in
their own lives -- the sorts of solutions that make room for
life -- - - Something I've always liked about the movie Mary
Poppins is that the heroine moves into a ugly mess, and
deals gracefully (or as gracefully as possible) with the
situation as it is.
