Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's
war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars"
defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make
the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an
application of science be successful? Is a militarized space
inevitable, necessary or impossible?

Should Pensioners be Nuked?
Demonstrations were held again this week wrt Tridents Subs
-- their cost and Pensioners -- their need to 'eat'
The demonstrators were saying - use the money now spent on the
Trident Subs to feed the poor!
The mAzzAa response to this might be 'let them eat yellow cake!?
The Scots gut-feel mood of the people seems to be 'away' from the
nuclear industry.

Somalia: Seen in perspective, UNOSOM was a failure. The
Secretary General of the UN attributed it to "a country without
legitimate authority to whom deliveries could be made." The real
answer may lie deeper, the dichotomous organisation in UNOSOM
where the top job had no military considerations but political
lack of the Somali participation; ignorance of the Somali psyche
and a marked lack of will to complete the mission when the nature
of peace-keeping turns into peace-enforcement. The last mentioned
contingency may indeed, have to be an essential part of future
peace-keeping. http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/CONFLICTS/Somalia.html

The USA engine has been powered by being in the forefront wrt
exploiting innovation. The innovation may be regarded by the US as
'homegrown', but the reality is - much invention-innovation is
developed elsewhere and moves into the the US.
If the USA is seen as an area lacking in regulation, truth, and
transparency .. then .. there might be a flight to the EU as it
further unites and develops. It has the population mass within and
ajoining to enable the marketing of product.
The pockets of the Government (USA) may seem deep, but they
aren't limitless. Prioratisation will be demanded by the USA voting
public who like the pensioners of Clydeside will see HUMAN NEED to
be of higher priority than the nuclear pie - in the sky.

THE GREAT AMERICAN HERO -- TRUTH in the news.
Noam Chomsky's Kurdish publisher in Istanbul, Aram
Publishing House, is being prosecuted by the state for including a
ferocious essay on the condition of Turkish Kurds in a collection
entitled American Interventionism.
As we know, Kurds in Turkey are 'terrorists', but Kurds in
Iraq are 'freedom fighters' and we're not quite sure about the
present status of the Iranian Kurds. As the Turkish government is
really keen to be admitted to the EU, it must assume that
publishing Chomsky is providing succour to 'terrorism' and that it
will win wide support.
One hopes that the country closest to Turkey will make its
voice heard loud and clear. Step forward Joschka Fischer: pentito
extraordinaire and foreign minister of Germany. Tariq Ali,
a frequent CounterPunch contributor, is the author of The Stone
Woman, just published in paperback by Verso. http://www.counterpunch.org/tariqkurds.html

Truth - will Turkey's wanting to enter the EU make them more
vulnerable to truth ?
How can Nukes - cloaked in wrappers of secrecy and stagnation -
help the discovery of truth? Entry to the EU culture is better at
shaping behaviour.

Thanks for the references, Mazza.
We all have priorities, and it seems to me that some points ought
to be very basic.
Gisterme , are we agreed on the points made in MD11489 rshow55
2/11/02 7:24pm ?
There are many technical details, but they have to be fit
into a context.

RShow55:
The context is missile defense. I'm sure you'll agree that before
we can establish umpires we must delineate the facts that are to
challenged and verified using objective measurements. No Olympic
Judges, Puhleese!
It's Fat Tuesday and I take it personaly!
