Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's
war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars"
defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make
the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an
application of science be successful? Is a militarized space
inevitable, necessary or impossible?

The sentiments of posts 10234-10238 aren't related to the
'subject' of the thread? The posters read as ONE and the SAME.
Totally lacking in professionalism - aspect 'customer service'.

Pentagon to procede with MD tests...
Saturday's test, in which a missile interceptor is fired from
the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands to chase down an
intercontinental-range missile carrying a mock nuclear warhead,
will be the first since July. That test was successful*, although
the previous one in July 2000 failed.
The missile intercept tests cost about $100 million each.
?? * that test was successful
Was it? Didn't the two material objects intent on collision have
homing beacon devices ?! Not exactly a 'test' in the purest sense of
the word - was it?! Who writes these press releases - Gisterme ?

The mission will only proceed if weather conditions improve and
"meet range safety requirements."
"The statement said the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization
will conduct the test in support of the Ground-based Midcourse
Defense program, formerly known as the National Missile Defense
system.
Two previous attempts to intercept an in-flight missile have
failed and two have been successful." Gisterme's changed
the press release - one out of two becomes two out of four -
bamboozled - looks more impressive than one out of two. If this
stuff is about centimeter accuracy and yet there's error regarding
agency press release accounts of how many previous tests ... wowee
.. it looks like a sham before the starter's flag is dropped.
Next the results will be available at 4.30 on Friday when no-one
pays attention.

The recent New Republic has a good article on NMD, and the Bush
team's history in SDI. A TMD would be a more realistic first step,
and we wouldn't have to trash the ABM just yet. Bushes handlers have
to get him in line with reality. '
