New York Times on the Web Forums Science Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an application of science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable, necessary or impossible?

100001000010000100001 To switch from one layer to another, and preserve pattern, you must in some sense use an odd number of switchings. For a 1 layer - 2 layer - 4 layer switching, repeating patterns work. For other layer transformations, and transforms, you can mix them up. At certain points, evolutionary explosions, or layer shifts occur. Only some patterns permit stability and function. Mickey mouse is a checking code, in a sense. Here is a checking code definition of Mickey Mouse, at a particular scale: "Mickey is simply the personality assigned to the purposes of laughter." Higher scale, pure form "Mickey Mouses" are quirky. Sometimes Mickey Mouse can do a lot. Sometimes a Mickey Mouse checking code, at exactly the right place, is just what you need. Mickey Mouse is a wonderful checking code. But without aid of another kind of character, there are some things Mickey Mouse cannot do. Russians and Americans are not fully agreed about Mickey Mouse. There are some details that you simply have to know, and eventually that means you have to check for them. Beyond a point, it takes a team. But with the right team, it can be very hopeful indeed. I'm doing some tests that are working very well, and have an ambition. I want to be able to explain some of the impolite things I've done on this thread, so that they tickle people in the right places, but not the wrong ones, relax people, and make some apologies and solutions possible that wouldn't otherwise be. I'm wrenched, and have made mistakes, but I'm making some mistakes that have to be made, and making corrections as best I can. I feel that things are working, and hope that, after feeling constrained and bad for a little while, some things can change cleanly, gracefully for the better. ---- Bob Showalter

Anybody want to talk to me about OBL, call me with two people on the line. You care that much, I'll drop what I'm doing, after getting to a stopping place -- within a few minutes. Otherwise I'm busy. Will delete in 5 minutes.
